Rwanda might not be the best fit if

You want gorilla trekking on a budget. Uganda permits cost roughly half.
You want classic savannah Big Five safari. Akagera is excellent but small. Kenya or Tanzania does the savannah experience on a far bigger scale.
You want to climb a major mountain. Rwanda's volcanic peaks are climbable but most travellers come for gorillas, not mountains.
You want a very long, varied safari. Rwanda is best as a focused destination, often combined with Kenya or Tanzania.

Rwanda's Parks & Reserves

Volcanoes National Park

Mountain Gorillas

Rwanda's headline destination. Home to roughly twelve habituated gorilla families across the volcanic chain on the border with Uganda and DRC. Permits are $1,500 and limited to 96 visitors per day. Lodges in the area are some of the finest in East Africa.

Nyungwe Forest National Park

Chimpanzees & Canopy

An ancient mountain rainforest in the country's southwest. Home to chimpanzees, 13 other primate species, and the spectacular canopy walkway. A worthwhile two-or-three-night addition to a Volcanoes-only trip for travellers wanting more than gorillas.

Akagera National Park

Big Five Reborn

On the eastern border with Tanzania. Once degraded by conflict and poaching, now a remarkable conservation success story. The Big Five live here again, fenced and protected, with reintroduced lions and rhinos. A different Rwanda from the volcanic west.

Lake Kivu

Lakeside Escape

Rwanda's western border. Quiet beaches, lakeside towns like Gisenyi and Kibuye, fishing villages and coffee plantations. A relaxing addition to a gorilla trip for travellers who want to slow down. Good for canoeing, swimming, and unwinding.

Kigali

The Capital

Africa's cleanest, safest, and arguably most thoughtful capital. The Genocide Memorial Centre is essential, sobering reading. The food scene is excellent, the markets are vibrant, and the city has a calm energy that surprises first-time visitors. Most travellers spend at least one full day here.

Mukura Forest Reserve

Off the Beaten Track

A small, less-visited forest reserve in the Western Province. Home to chimpanzees and several primate species, plus excellent birding. For travellers who want quieter primate experiences than Volcanoes or Nyungwe.

Mt. Karisimbi

Volcanic Climb

At 4,507 metres, the highest of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga chain. A tough two-day climb with summit camping. Far quieter than Kilimanjaro, with the chance of seeing gorillas en route. For experienced trekkers.

Iby'iwacu Cultural Village

Community Tourism

A reformed-poacher community tourism project at the edge of Volcanoes National Park. Traditional dancing, craft demonstrations, and a real opportunity to support communities living next to gorilla habitat. A genuinely meaningful add-on to a gorilla trek.

Twin Lakes Burera & Ruhondo

Northern Beauty

Two crater lakes near Volcanoes National Park, surrounded by terraced hills and traditional villages. Boat trips, swimming, and some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. A peaceful day excursion from Musanze.

When to Visit Rwanda

Rwanda has good safari options year-round, but the dry seasons make gorilla trekking and primate tracking significantly easier. Here is what to expect month by month.

January & February

Short Dry Season

Drier conditions, easier trekking. Cooler temperatures at altitude. A good window for gorilla trekking before peak prices kick in.

March, April & May

Long Rains

Heaviest rain of the year. Trails become difficult. Some lodge discounts. Birding is excellent and landscapes are dramatically green. For experienced travellers comfortable with rain.

June, July & August

Long Dry Season

The best months for gorilla trekking. Firm trails, clear views, excellent visibility. Highest prices and busiest period. Book at least six months ahead.

September & October

Shoulder

Brief light rains starting. Still very pleasant for trekking. Lower prices than peak. A genuine sweet spot before short rains begin.

November

Short Rains

Afternoon showers common. Trails wetter. Lower prices on permits and lodges. Many travellers find this an underrated month.

December

Christmas Peak

Drier conditions return. Christmas and New Year fill up early at the top lodges. Excellent gorilla trekking weather.

Our honest recommendation. For best conditions and not the highest prices, go in late June, early July, late September, or October. June to August are the absolute best for trail conditions if you can book early.

Practical Information

Visa

Visa-on-arrival available for all visitors at $50, or apply online beforehand. East Africa Tourist Visa ($100) covers Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda for 90 days, which is excellent value for multi-country trips.

Currency

Rwandan Franc (RWF). USD widely accepted at lodges, gorilla permits, and tour payments. Bring crisp USD notes printed after 2009. ATMs widely available in Kigali and major towns. Cards work at most upmarket lodges and restaurants.

Vaccinations

Yellow fever certificate required for all visitors. Malaria prophylaxis recommended. Routine vaccines (tetanus, hepatitis A and B, typhoid) should be current. Rwanda is generally lower-risk for malaria than its neighbours.

Time Zone

CAT (UTC+2). One hour behind Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. No daylight saving.

Languages

Kinyarwanda is the national language, with French, English, and Swahili all official. English is widely spoken in tourism. Knowing a few Kinyarwanda greetings (Muraho, Murakoze) is appreciated.

Power

230V, European-style 2-pin plugs. Different from Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Bring an EU adapter. Most lodges have charging facilities.

What to Pack

Neutral colours plus serious rain gear. Volcanoes is wet even in dry season. Sturdy waterproof hiking boots essential. Long trousers, long sleeves, gaiters, gardening gloves. Cool mornings need layers.

Tipping

$15 to $20 per traveller per day for your driver-guide. Gorilla trekking guides: $10 to $20 per group. Porters: $10 to $20 per person. Lodge staff: $5 to $10 pooled per day.
